Glen-Gery Brick in Redfield Iowa has been a Teamster shop for over thirty-five years. This plant is not only a Teamster tradition, but a family tradition as well. Jed Harwood is the third generation in his family to be a Local 90 Steward at this plant. A linage like that is a lot to be proud of and not taken lightly by his family, his coworkers, or his local Senator Staci Appel. His father Terry Harwood who works with his son has taught the same Teamster values to his sons that were passed down to him.
State Senator Staci Appel is a well respected friend to the Teamsters and had met Jed Harwood at our monthly membership meeting at the Teamster Local 90 union hall. When Jed’s story of where he works and his family history was told she stated she would like to see Glen-Gery Brick for herself, the plant and many of the workers live within her Senate District. She was given the full tour walking the process from raw clay to the stacking of the finished product. On a 95 degree day that’s a lot of cat walks. The highlight of the tour for her was seeing the pride of these Teamster family members.
The Teamsters at Redfield are some of the hardest working folks I’ve ever seen. Shoulder to shoulder on the Monorail (The packaging line) it gets so hot in the summer that they have water misting the air to make it tolerable. It’s the type of work that creates callused hands, a strong work ethic, and a handshake that emits strength, integrity, and pride like no other. I cannot think of a better group to cover my back when the going gets tough than the three people in this picture. These are three people that will stand up for working Teamsters no matter what.
